The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) has announced plans to undertake road safety audits along the Lesseru-Kitale and Morphus-Lokichar sections of the Kenya-South Sudan road corridor.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a tender notice issued on Tuesday, October 13, KeNHA invited consulting firms to express interest in providing road safety audits, public sensitisation, and management capacity-building services, which are under Phase One of the project.

The consultancy is expected to run for 48 months, during which the selected firm will assess road safety measures during construction and after the upgraded sections are completed.

Further, audits will be conducted during the construction and after completion of the Lesseru-Kitale and Morphus-Lokichar road sections.

📌 What You Need to Know

Additionally, KeNHA is planning to train six government agencies on road crash data management as part of a four-year initiative.

The programme will involve the KeNHA, Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), National Police Service (NPS) and Ministry of Health.

For the consultants selected, their main requirement will b e to review previous road safety audits done in order to establish whether their recommendations were incorporated and are being implemented during the construction.

Some of the measures will include traffic management plans and the risks that trade could pose to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

KeNHA will not only do inspections; instead, it will use the consultants to roll out road safety awareness campaigns targeting drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, schools and other relevant stakeholders.

The project is being financed by the African Development Group with the Government of Kenya, which is intended to pay for the consultancy.
