President William Ruto's Cabinet has approved the construction of three major roads, including a 400-kilometre road linking Busia to Migori, to improve transport in more than ten Nyanza, Western and Rift Valley counties.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The three projects comprise the 253-kilometre South Rift-Lake Region Gateway Corridor, the 256-kilometre Great Highlands Connectivity Corridor and the 400-kilometre Lake Victoria Ring Road.

According to a cabinet dispatch released on Friday, October 9, the government said the projects would improve market access, reduce transport costs, and shorten travel times for farmers and traders.

“To open up rural economies and improve market access, three strategic road corridors were cleared for advancement under the Roads for Rural Economic Development Programme,” the dispatch read.

📌 What You Need to Know

The 253-kilometre corridor will connect parts of Nakuru, Bomet, Narok, Kericho and Migori counties, passing through areas including Neissuit, Salgaa, Elburgon, Turi, Muchorwe, Langwenda and Kamwaura.

The route will comprise several sections, including Neissuit-Salgaa-Elburgon, Turi-Embomoss, Embomoss-Tengecha, Tengecha-Labotiet, Labotiet-Kilgoris and Kilgoris-Mariwa-Sare, connecting homes across the South Rift and Lake region.

Meanwhile, the 256-kilometre corridor will connect several areas in Kericho to the North and South Rift Valley, passing through Kericho, Ainamoi, Poiywek, Chepkoiyo and Girimori before reaching the Kenegut Border.

From the Kenegut Border, it will extend through Mbogo Valley, Kamelilo, Maraba, Kabirer, Sirwa, Lessos, Chuiyet, Kipkabus and Nyaru, connecting high-altitude agricultural zones to other economic centres.

Additionally, the 400-kilometre Lake Victoria Ring Road will connect five Lake Victoria basin counties of Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay and Migori.

In Busia, the route will pass through Bunyala and Funyula, while the Siaya section will connect Yala Swamp, Bondo, Usenge, Osieko and Dhogoye.
