Jenna-Leigh Bilong sits down with Women For Change founder Sabrina Walter to explore how a young woman who moved from Berlin to Cape Town became one of the most recognisable figures in South African GBV activism, and how the Purple Movement and G20 Women’s Shutdown grew into something far bigger than the organisation behind them. Sabrina reflects on unequal media attention around femicide, pressure surrounding the shutdown, the financial reality of activist work, internal conflict within movement spaces and why influence is not automatically meaningful. She also speaks about being named to TIME100 and the quieter parts of her life she protects beyond Women For Change. Watch the full conversation. 4.3% is today’s Number of the Day. South Africa’s annual inflation rate fell from 5% in June to 4.3% in July, its first decline in five months. That is encouraging for households under pressure, but it comes with an important distinction: prices are not falling. They are simply rising more slowly. A typical basket of goods and services still costs more than it did a year ago, and the burden differs depending on how much a household spends on essentials such as food and fuel. Francis Herd unpacks what helped inflation cool, including food inflation falling below 1%, smaller increases in municipal tariffs than last year and lower fuel prices in July. With inflation easing, another interest-rate hike appears less likely, while the possibility of eventual rate relief is starting to enter the conversation. But global energy risks and renewed fuel-price pressure mean 4.3% may be good news without being the
