While subsidies are not bad in themselves and must be properly designed and implemented, the subsidy removed by the Tinubu administration had to go. That subsidy regime was introduced in the 1970s, and a lot has changed since then. In my view, it was almost irresponsible that it was not removed earlier. We should not return to the pre-2023 era. However, our industrial competitiveness and trade policy are tied to energy incentives. We may need targeted subsidies for manufacturing at some point, but any such scheme must be structured solely for that purpose.
