Expert says ransoms fuel militant expansion in Mali

Dr Abdourahmane Idrissa, a political scientist at Leiden University, says ransom payments provide militants in Mali with funds to purchase weapons and expand their operations. He warns that kidnapping has evolved beyond a fundraising tactic, potentially enabling extremist groups to strengthen their influence.
